Yasmin Coe, a Manchester based indie singer songwriter, recently released their second single ‘Doubt’ on January 26th . This song only further cemented to the world Coe’s talent of writing beautifully crafted heart wrenching lyrics that are backed by a compelling and fun beat, as they had earlier proved with their 2022 single ‘No Hope’.

Coe writes relatable songs which create a vivid story unique to each listener, with lyrics like ‘What is on your mind when the conversations running dry? You smoke again to pass the time; you lose yourself in thinking of your life.’ In this harrowing moment as the song begins, the listener is transported back to a time in their life where they too have felt like an outsider amongst a crowd of seemingly content people. The lyric feels reminiscent of getting lost in a labyrinth of questions as the room begins to feel too warm and the music grows too loud, and the realisation hits you that you have nothing figured out in an ocean of dancing, free souls. You can’t help but feel alone. Coe’s ‘Doubt’ really makes a listener feel seen.

As the song progresses the instruments grow fuller and stronger until a kaleidoscope of expressive drums and shredding guitar accompany the vulnerable chorus. Coe’s lyrics talk of blissful ignorance in the face of the hardships of life. They enrapture an audience with ‘You say you’re fine, you’re happy with your little life. But cannot get out, don’t question, don’t doubt’.

‘Doubt’ draws to a close as we are serenaded by Coe’s ethereal and almost gothic vocals. The song’s end appears to mirror the single’s cover of Coe stood alone; their flowing white dress tainted by the elements just as a soul is tainted by the cruel course of life. They are turned away as if screaming their questions out to the world as a way to hide them from others. This moment fills the listener with the catharsis they crave as they realise, they are not alone in their doubts.

So go and give ‘Doubt’ a listen now as we anticipate what comes next for Yasmin Coe.
