On April 11th Seb Lowe and his invigorating band cordially invited fans to the packed Brudenell Social Club, Leeds for a night of cathartic protest as a part of his headline tour.

The night began with the first opener Felix Hill performing a heartfelt acoustic set barring his soul an audience of strangers through an act of powerful vulnerability. His set houses his debut single ‘Pale Moons’ whilst also introducing the audience to a few unreleased tracks for them to anticipate. After Felix Hill’s intimate set the second opener seventeen year old Manchester based Alex Spencer set the stage ablaze with his electric performance The young artist is certainly talented beyond his years with a wild stage presence to match.

With the audience buzzing already feeling the ear ringing, sweat-laced effects of live music Seb Lowe and his band took to the stage adorned in blowup crowns which a few lucky fans were able to take home as souvenirs. Lowe from the first drumbeat appeared grandeur making it clear that the stage is where he belongs and the songs, he graces fans with are an artform which can only be fully appreciated live. The gig was opened with fan favourite ‘Kill Him (he’s a socialist) whilst the energy only rose with ‘Ode to Britannia’, ‘Cavalryman’, ‘I Fell In Love With A Talking Head’ and of course his latest single ‘The Royal Family’.

The atmosphere was calmed when the more personal songs such as ‘Freak’ were played. At one point only Lowe and powerhouse violinist Kate Couriel were left on stage, leaving the audience in awe of Couriel’s skill on full display serenading the audience without the need of a punchy baseline or pounding drumbeat.

Around halfway through the electrifying show Lowe stopped to make an exclusive announcement, hyping the audience up again in a fit of excitement. The announcement was that a new single, which they later played, is to be released on April 24th and is named ‘JUMP SCARE’. The audience listened in shock, happy to be a part of such a special evening.

Before Lowe closed the show, he blessed everyone with a speech which reflected on the meaning behind his songs. Seb Lowe songs speak heavily on politics in the form of pure poetry, reflecting on the corruption of our current system whether that be the government, monarchy, education or just the backwards views of so many people we encounter. Lowe promotes being on the right side of history and condemns those who are too ignorant to understand that they’re wrong. The show drew to a close with ‘Terms and Conditions’ leaving the audience on a high which will certainly leave them with post-concert depression.

So go and catch Seb Lowe on his other tour dates and feel empowered, but buy your tickets quick as most shows are already sold out. Also be sure to check out Felix Hill and Alex Spencer as they are certainly ones to watch.
