Gravy, a Leeds based indie rock band with shoegaze and 2000’s post punk influences, released their debut single ‘Wait Another Day’ on April 26th after much anticipation from fans. With talent beyond their years Gravy has delivered a song of relentless longing after being wholly consumed by another, whether this person is good for you or not.
The single opens with a pounding drumbeat joined by a killer guitar riff which will leave your ears ringing in a good way. The first verse houses a punchy bass taking centre stage, driving the song on right from the start. The first lyrics, ‘you’ve been holding my hands way too tight. I’ve been searching for this far too long’ conjure the image of being in a controlling relationship but you are to blinded by your love for the person to realise just how toxic of a situation you are in and that the person you care deeply for is actually just holding you back.
Soon listeners enter the chorus in a cacophony of booming drums and satisfying guitar riffs which are mixed perfectly with the lyrics, ‘now that you’re gone I can’t wait another day till you come home.’ This vulnerable moment describes yearning for someone to return as their absence makes you forget all the negativity which surrounds your relationship with them.
After a whirlwind of a second verse listeners are blessed with a pre-chorus which graces them with the lyrics, ‘I’ve got a funny feeling this is not right. I’ve got a funny feeling I’ve been playing my cards right tonight. But I hope I don’t make it stop.’ Here Gravy paints a picture of choosing to ignore the signs and fall into another person’s manipulations as this person is someone you crave the affection of. Living in blissful ignorance is often easier than saying goodbye. The delicate strum of an electric guitar builds into a punchy drumbeat and shredding guitar riffs before entering the final chorus.
A powerful guitar solo closes the song on a high note, leaving the listener in a constant anticipation for what Gravy has to offer next. ‘Wait Another Day’ transports listeners too the cracked walls and sticky floors of a beloved music venue, overcrowded with excited people bumping into one another as the music builds into a crescendo of ecstasy.
So go and give ‘Wait Another Day’ a listen and delight in the revelry yourself as we await more music and live shows from the talented Gravy.
