Veronica Everheart releases even more angst-fuelled indie rock with ‘Lyn’

Phoenix-based singer songwriter Veronica Everheart returns with yet another abrasive yet simultaneously sugar-sweet track in “Lyn”. The song comes soon after the release of her previous single “microcosm” last month, which seemed to mark a turning point in Everheart’s musical evolution towards a more raw and experimental style while still retaining a knack for catchy pop writing. In doing so, she has managed to carve out a fascinatingly idiosyncratic style.

A personal highlight of Everheart’s recent work is the impassioned screams that she has begun to employ at the end of her songs. While “Lyn” explores ever so slightly more of a traditional structure than its predecessor, the screaming serves to catch the listener somewhat off guard as a reminder that Everheart’s music is, by no means, predictable. We are aware of our own biases here, yes we are suckers for a good scream.

These most recent tracks were produced by Junius Karr, Karr’s unpredictable and overdriven production has added a much appreciated edge to Everheart’s music, with synthesisers and guitars that clip with so much fuzz that you feel as though the sounds are shooting up right into your brain. This is not to discredit Everheart’s contributions, of course, for her lyrics on “Lyn” continue to be as perfectly introspective as it’s predecessor without them veering into the path often travelled by other songwriters of unbearable self pity.

Everheart has described her music before as “if Caroline Polachek and Kim Gordon made a song together”, while additionally noting artists such as Stereolab and Broadcast as other influences. Despite her inspirations being noticeable, Everheart seems to not merely be the sum of her influences but an impressively unique musician in her own right.

“Lyn” by Veronica Everheart is out now.
