lucky break, a singer songwriter who bathes listeners in her poetic lyricism, released their second single ‘Burning String’ on May 24th allowing fans to continue to immerse themselves in the fantastical world of lucky break. ‘Burning String’ spins the relatable tale of the world wanting to take something from women constantly and truly believing they have the right to demand it whilst women just crave to be free. Within the restorative world of lucky break women can feel heard and be freed from the harsh shadow of scrutiny society casts upon them and regain their sense of worth. In this world of justice and purity women can find themselves again and learn how much of themselves they are willing to share whilst also finding the courage to escape the conventional image of girlhood they have been held in the shackles of and establish the true person they want to be.
The single opens with the soft strum of a guitar giving the song a dream-marbled feel,
already whisking the listener off into the healing world of lucky break. A steady drumbeat is added as the first verse begins lacing the song with a feeling of anger at this unjust world and the situations it puts us in. The opening lyrics, ‘be a good daughter listen to your father even when he isn’t right’ instil within the listener how women are constantly told to be the girl that people want them to be. To be respectful, to be submissive and recognise their place under men in society whilst making sure to do it all with a maternal smile and perfect body to show that they couldn’t be happier about it all too make men feel more comfortable. Through these vulnerable words listeners are unchained from society’s corruptions to fully feel the divine female rage they’ve been holding inside for so long.
Soon listeners enter the pre-chorus in a kaleidoscope of luscious harmonies giving rich
layers to lucky break’s already ethereal and controlled vocals before the single bursts open into the chorus with the addition of string instruments, transforming the song into an anthem of radical feminism and lucky break into a powerhouse artist. The lyrics, ‘cause you can feel it leading you on like a burning string’ convey when you no longer know how much of yourself the world is allowed to take because they’ve been taking from you little be little your whole life, so you stop knowing which aspects of yourself are really you and which characteristics are just a product of the world’s manipulations. The world will take from women always whether that be the glass ceiling they can’t break or the clothes they can’t wear anymore in fear of the continued sexualisation. The world will forever burn women.
Standout lyrics within the single, ‘and when the sail is moving slow, I dream of sand’ invite listeners to disassociate from their corrupt reality for a little while under a canopy of safety or floating in an ocean of the richest daydreams. ‘Burning String’ has both carefully crafted lyrics and a driving beat that just makes you want to dance barefoot in the forest and scream to the stars, reclaiming your true self and healing where the world and its backwards ideologies branded you.
So go and give ‘Burning String’ a listen and be sure to watch the music video also to fully
immerse yourselves in the world of lucky break, where listeners are truly free from the
injustices of the world and can feel seen by an artist who puts their hardships and anxieties Into words. Also be sure to check out their first single ‘Honeysuckle’ as we anticipate what comes next for the talented lucky break.
