Sophie Madison’s new single is an empowering anthem

by Reb Jordin

Sophie Madison, a Brisbane based pop rock singer songwriter, released her second single ‘Over it’ on May 31st and fans are not disappointed. ‘Over it’ perfectly portrays how frustrating it is to be a woman within a world which forever tells them exactly who to be and which impossible expectation they must fulfil in order to be good enough in the male gaze. Sophie continuously creates music which empowers listeners to be the main character in their own lives even when people try to overshadow them, and this song is no exception. ‘Over it’ is truly for the girls and will be the perfect song for their perfect summer.

‘Over it’ opens with a shredding guitar lacing the song with an angst perfect for all the Kat Stratfords of the world who won’t submit to a man and will speak their minds forever. As we enter the first verse a relentless drum is added giving the song a beat that is just irresistible, you must get up and dance on the graves of all the men you have forced from your life after their arrogance wronged you. The opening lyrics, ‘be hot and dumb and smart and young and old and into arts’ convey how impossible it is to be a woman. The world tells women to be beautiful and have a perfect body but don’t be too flawless otherwise you will distract men but don’t dress too modestly otherwise you are frigid. Be wild and give a man a good time but remember to quieten down with a maternal smile when he asks so he feels coddled and loved. Be independent and get a good job but give it all up for motherhood because a man deserves a wife who will raise his child for him. Be smart, nobody likes a ditsy girl, but don’t outsmart a man and recognise your place under him in society and look cute all whilst being oppressed. Men want you to be everything and then will shame you for being too much.

In a cacophony of killer guitars and pounding drums the chorus begins. The lyrics, ‘say your prayers I don’t care I think we’ve been here before and I’m really getting over it’ present how the cyclical structure of women being treated poorly and made to feel small is one even the most feminist modern girls face. Here Sophie allows listeners to be truly over it, to be done with being told what to do, to be done with toxic relationships, and to be done with being branded by the nice and demure image of girlhood all for the men who fail to respect them.

Soon listeners enter the second verse which is mixed perfectly with a punchy bass. Here
Sophie playfully sings the lyrics, ‘I’m not your puppet on a string that you bring out to play. I’d leave you with your dignity, but you threw it away’ which convey how a man tends to believe he has the right to control women, even if the woman he is controlling is someone he loves, so when she speaks up for herself and reclaims the voice he selfishly took, he acts out like the small man society allows him to be and embarrasses himself greatly.

The single fully bursts open into a euphoric crescendo in the final chorus, with Sophie
screaming out of the bridge and her powerhouse vocals layered with the riot grrrl approved lyrics, ‘Over it’ really goes out with a bang. ‘Over it’ is for the girls who want to be seen for their minds and not their bodies. For the girls who are terrified that motherhood will only cause them to be trapped by the glass ceiling. For the girls who are sick of being told how they should act and who they should be. ‘Over it’ is for the girls who are angry at an impossible world which tells them they will never be enough.

So go and pre-save ‘Over it’ and listen to it until your ears ring when it is released. So, throw your ex’s clothes onto the ground from your balcony and scream these lyrics with your best friends in your early two thousands chick flick getaway car. ‘Over it’ is the hot angry girl anthem of the summer so add it to your playlist and drive away from the mess men keep creating, to a life where you can be anything and everything you want to be. So, if you are looking for a fun song with an important meaning Sophie Madison is the perfect artist for you.
