Listeners have one again been invited into the curious mind of lucky break, an emerging anti pop star, to experience their most hopeful and upbeat song yet. On July 26th lucky break released their third single ‘Red Balloon’, a song of freedom for the people who romanticise packing their entire lives into one suitcase and leaving their small town behind in search of a cosmic land of dreams waiting to be achieved.

‘Red Balloon’ opens with the strum of a folky guitar and a satisfying twang immersing listeners into the dream-marbled world of lucky break, a taste of freedom and a sanctuary away from all the violence which plagues our everyday lives. Rich vocals sing the lyrics, ‘I just miss my summer self and all my summer clothes’ which convey how we crave the person we become when we are bathed in sunlight, a person who is happy and optimism-laced rather than the person we are forced to be in the biting chill of snow. In summer freckles, a sign of freedom amongst the elements, draw constellations across our sun kissed faces rather than the scars which are left behind when our skin grows paler in the harsh winter. Summer marks floating away on an ocean of stars, sunburnt shoulders in open topped getaway cars and the escape from mundane life in favour of nature and new lands. Once again lucky break has created an escape from reality for her listeners, where they can hide under a canopy of poetic lyricism until they are ready to become their own poet.

Soon we enter the first pre-chorus which is home to standout lyrics, ‘where do you go when you get too big for the world that kept you safe?’ This moment presents when you’ve outgrown your hometown and so desire a world of more opportunity. Your small town will always be a haven amongst the chaos of adulthood, but you are ready to move on and become the person you’ve dreamt of since you were a child.

‘Red Balloon’ then bursts into the chorus in a battle march of punchy drums. The lyrics, ‘I could be the red balloon rising over a town we left behind. Wanna be the red balloon, white ribbon waving goodbye’ are an anthem of freedom for the people who wish they could float away from their normality to instead live in a world of the successes they can achieve and the hope for a better future then the present they’ve been trapped in.

After a whirlwind second verse listeners are blessed with another pre-chorus, home to the beautifully crafted lyrics, ‘where do you go when the years betrayed you cause you were just a kid?’ This moment portrays the struggle to move forward when you were so impaired by your youth that you were forced to grow up too quickly. When your childish optimism led you to dream big dreams, dreams bigger than yourself and the town that you grew up in, so your future seems like nothing more then a fantasy. You just have to persevere until these dreams do become a reality, as the days grow longer and harder whilst the years just disappear. lucky break gives listeners hope that no dream is really too big, that they can make their child self proud and live in a world that is repaired for younger generations to dream in too.

The single closes in a cacophony of luscious harmonies, serenading the listener in the last electric chorus. ‘Red Balloon’ is for the people who like driving with all the windows down, wind blowing their hair wild whilst sunlight dances across the open road. For the people who still dance in the rain at one with the elements. For the people who live for the child they once were. ‘Red Balloon’ is for the people who chase freedom like shooting stars.

So go and give ‘Red Balloon’ a listen and seek refuge in the wonderous world of lucky break. Also be sure to check out their other two singles ‘Honeysuckle’ and ‘Burning String’ to fully immerse yourself in lucky break’s enchanting lore.
