lucky break, an emerging anti pop star, recently released her debut EP ‘Biggest Thing’ on September 13 th to the anticipation of fans. This artist invites listeners to share her world, to disassociate from our cruel realities and to live out the dreams we’ve always been told are too big or too bold.
The EP opens with her debut single ‘Honeysuckle’, lulling listeners into her dream-marbled clutches, immersing us in her curious mind and enticing us with all the wonders that lucky break has to offer. ‘Honeysuckle’ is a calm song, it dulls the cacophony of everyday life and teaches listeners that in the grandiose face of Mother Nature, what’s happening on social media and our own personal problems will all one day appear insignificant. The fragility of human life will always loom over us, but nature is our one constant. So, respect nature and exile consumerism, lay down in the grass, scream up to the stars and join the divine world of lucky break. Ethereal harmonies and the delicate strum of a guitar accompany lucky break’s soft vocals, further enchanting listeners in this short but sweet song. Standout lyrics, ‘my heart is a honeysuckle’ weave the poetic metaphor of a pure human being linked to the safety of nature. Through the pastoral imagery, peace is restored within the listener eternally comforted by the sanctuary of lucky break.
Our journey through the fantastical world of lucky break continues into the second single ‘Burning String’. With the beat picking up, plucky strings and lucky break’s beautifully expressive vocals the EP’s story takes a turn into satisfying female rage and a corrupt society held accountable. Standout lyrics ‘be a good daughter, listen to your father even when he isn’t right’ reflect the universal hardship of girlhood. You can love a man and not be ruled by him yet the expectation to just smile and accept a man’s word even when he’s completely wrong is still forced upon women, the fact that women must play dumb and act demure and give in to the glass ceiling isn’t something lucky break will accept. So, she empowers listeners to stand up for themselves and enjoy their right to equality in this anthem of divine feminism.
The story continues with a folky guitar and a taste of freedom within the next song ‘Red Balloon’. It is an enchantment of pure hope and excitement encouraging spontaneity within the listener and inspiring them to embrace the natural world rather than getting caught up in the mundanity of everyday life. In the chorus she sings, ‘I could be the red balloon rising over a town we left behind’ which enforces the message to live life to the fullest, not to be held back when people tell you your dreams aren’t possible because lucky break is living proof that they are. Siren-like harmonies and an addictive beat add to the trance-like quality of lucky break, like this EP belongs in the cosmos or in our wildest dreams, like it is too poetic and too important to just be played in the car.
The EP ends in a euphoric crescendo with the final song ‘One Way to be’ which presents the struggle of growing up in the years where you are still a child but are expected to be an adult. This song also explores how you must be multiple versions of yourself in order to please everyone around you. lucky break is a true powerhouse within this song. With her loudest, grittiest vocals accompanied by a killer electric guitar and a relentless beat the EP closes on a high. The lyrics, ‘I don’t want to wake up, get drunk, go to work and kill my friends’ reflect how she doesn’t want to get trapped by society’s corrupt conventions but rather strive for a radical future. Having been recorded in a car and layered with candid talking and giggles, ‘One Way to Be’ enforces the feeling that lucky break is an adventure. An adventure of anger, happiness, heartbreak and freedom. An adventure for all listeners to join, ‘she is the moment we have all been waiting for. lucky break is ours’.
