Yasmin Coe, an indie pop singer songwriter, recently released her single ‘Expected As
Much’ on October 25th to the anticipation of fans. Coe describes the song as a sad girl tune turned grunge pop banger, cementing the single as an anthem of angst and hidden heartbreak.

The song opens with a relentless bass and a shredding guitar, paired with Coe’s deep and smooth vocals to create a killer track. The angsty grunge sound that the song is laced with is reminiscent of the 90’s garage bands and indie venues that finally feel like they’re having a resurgence, giving the single a nostalgic feel that keeps you addicted. Coe sings the lyrics, ‘God I miss you why can’t you try to miss me too? And you threaten to leave knowing that I belong with you.’ This moment conveys when you’re living in a tortured state, having fallen for someone you thought you could change even going against your own better judgement. However, some people just don’t want to be fixed.

The single comes to life in the chorus with the lyrics, ‘I don’t know what I expected of you, but I know what you wanted from me’ which present when you knew better but your heart remains broken. You feel like your pain isn’t valid as the pain was only to be expected, you knew you couldn’t rely on this person, yet you fell for them anyway. Coe’s vulnerable lyricism brings closure to listeners who have been through this painfully universal experience of thinking that they too can fix someone who wishes to remain broken.

As the song draws to a close, satisfying guitar riffs and synth infuse the single with a further angst, deepening the frustration of being proven right that someone only loved you to use you. The pop upbeat nature of the song gives it a euphoric sound, like the track is one long high. Then you listen and sink into to the lyrics and realise they’re heartbreaking and raw, something much more real then the manufactured high of the mainstream grunge pop music it sounds reminiscent of. ‘Expected As Much’ is truly for the nostalgic girls who reflect on past relationships to heal they’re hearts and protect themselves from similar situations in the future.
